Rev. 8-15-94 Silent Answer allows your SupraFAXModem to "listen in" on an incoming phone call and determine whether or not the incoming call is a voice call or a fax call. If a fax call is detected the fax software can then receive the fax; if a voice call is detected the call is allowed to continue with the answering device. Required components for using Silent Answer are: 1. Fax Software that currently supports a Silent Answer mode. 2. Answering device: Any answering machine that stops playing its message when a phone on the same line is taken off-hook should work. If you have an answering machine that does not stop playing its message when a phone on the same line is taken off-hook you will need to purchase an adapter that adds that capability. (Radio Shack sells such a part for about $7.99. It is called a "Teleprotector" by Radio Shack.) You can also answer incoming calls with a telephone, then assume the role of the answering machine. This means you will need to hang-up when your modem responds to the incoming fax. 3. SupraFAXModem V.32, V.32bis, 144i, 144PB, or 144LC: These modems provide support for Silent Answer. The 144LC modem will only allow Silent Answer with fax software using Class 1 fax commands. Hardware lay-out: The answering device and the modem cannot be plugged into each other. If they cannot be placed on separate extensions, you will need to obtain a Y-splitter. Settings (rings and other important stuff): 1. The answering device should be set to answer the phone on the second or third ring. (The modem should be set to answer at least two rings later.) 2. The first one to two seconds of your outgoing answering machine message should be either low volume or silence to allow for detection of an incoming fax tone. 3. Your software should be set for Silent Answer mode. How it works: 1) Your phone/fax line starts ringing. 2) The answering device picks up the line. 3) The SupraFAXModem starts 'listening in' on the line, for the fax tone. 4) Depending on the presence of a fax tone: a) Fax tone is detected - the modem picks up the call and receives the fax. --OR-- b) No fax tone is detected - the answering device continues processing the call. Setting up the software: 1) Start Windows on your computer and launch WinFax Lite, WinFax 2.0, Winfax Pro 3.0, or WinFax Pro 4.0. Click on HELP followed by ABOUT, and check the release date, plus the Class of your software. If the release date is before November, 1992 you will need to download the latest Supra drivers from the "Windows" section on the Supra BBS (503-967-2444). There is one driver for Class 1 and another driver for Class 2. If your software is any release during or after November, 1992, you do not need to download any additional files. For Silent Answer to work correctly, Winfax 2.0 and Winfax Pro 3.0 need to be installed as Class 2. WinfaxLite 3.0 (packaged with SupraFaxModems) and WinFax Pro 4.0 can be installed as Class1 or Class2. Refer to the Software documention if you need to change from Class1 to Class2. 2) Open the Windows Control Panel (usually in the "Main" group in the Program Manager) and select "PORTS" (double-click on it). Choose the COM port that your modem is using (either the "COM" setting for internals, or the serial port it's plugged into for externals). Under the "Settings" option, change the baud rate to 57600 (there won't be a scrollable 57600 option, so you need to type it in manually). Also select XON/XOFF flow control. Close the Windows Control Panel when you're finished. 3) Start your communication software (Procomm, Comit, Windows Terminal, etc.) and use 'ati3' to check the modem ROM firmware version. For Winfax Class 2 applications: External modems should have 1.2-H or 1.2-J ROMs. Internal modems require at least 1.2-L ROMs. (These are the minimum required ROMs for Silent Answer. Later revisions will also work.) For Winfax Class 1 applications, all modems require 1.4/1.7(or later) ROMs. If your modem does not have one of the minimum required ROMs listed above, you can obtain an upgrade from the "Order New Products" section of the Supra BBS. Exit your communications software when you're finished checking your ROM revision. 4) Start your copy of WinFax. You will need to modify your "modem initialization string" in the fax software. Use the default initialization string for your modem model. In WinFax Pro 4.0, you will need to change S7=55 to S7=90. Then, add the appropriate Silent Answer command. Available Silent Answer commands are listed below: +FCLASS=0+FAA=2\ for 1.2-H, J, L ROMs (Class 2) +FAA=2\ for 1.4x,1.7x or 1.8x ROMs (Class 2) +FAE=3\ for 1.4x,1.7x or 1.8x ROMs (Class 1). (Note: the " \ " character represents a "Carriage Return" which is always the last character in the string. There should only be one " \ " character per string.) 5) Since faxes are a very timing-critical operation for your modem and computer, it's a good idea to turn OFF any screen savers you might be running. (This includes the built-in Windows screen saver and third party programs such as After Dark.) Some TSR programs and disk compressors (like DoubleSpace or Stacker) can also cause unreliable faxing-- remove them if possible. Be sure you're not using Windows 3.0! (Windows 3.1 made significant enhancements and bug fixes to Windows 3.0 and should replace Windows 3.1 whenever possible.) *(WinFax and its associated displays and graphics are Copyright and Trademarks of Delrina Technology, Inc.
