Orchid Technology Kelvin Series Driver Release v1.4 --------------------------------------- The file you have downloaded, KEL.EXE contains the complete files from the Kelvin Install/Driver disk v1.4. This readme file contains instructions for making a Kelvin driver disk, so you can install the drivers. You have already completed the first step, by unpacking the KEL.EXE file and reading this. When you unpack KEL.EXE you should have the following files: DISK ID 22 12-27-94 1:40a KELVIN 001 1167812 04-11-95 4:29p INSTALL DAT 29029 06-30-95 2:49p INSTALL HLP 75910 12-27-94 1:40a KINSTALL EXE 109329 08-10-92 10:00a AVGAGR DRV 2875 06-12-92 10:00a TC132X25 DRV 1185 06-12-92 10:00a TC132X43 DRV 1185 06-12-92 10:00a COLORFIX EXE 555 08-18-94 10:00a README 1ST 4883 08-03-95 NOTE! Known Shortcoming in this Release --------------------------------- 1. The Windows drivers in this release may show stray pixels on the desktop title bars and icons with some Kelvin boards. This is strictly a cosmetic problem and doesn't affect the functionality of the drivers. We are working on a fix. Using your Kelvin Drivers ----------------------------- 1. Copy all files (listed above) to a blank high density 3.5" floppy disk. 2. Log onto your floppy drive and run the KINSTALL.EXE program install the driver files to your hard drive. You should run KINSTALL.EXE from DOS, not from Windows. The KINSTALL.EXE program is menu driven, and fairly self explanatory. The KINSTALL menu helps you install drivers for a variety of different applications. If you have questions during any part of the installation process, press the F1 key for context sensitive help, or see your Kelvin manual for more information. Changes in this Release ----------------------- 1. The Windows resource usage and release issue has been fixed in this release. 2. Certain problems running DOS applications under Windows have been fixed in this release. 3. There are new drivers for AutoDesk products in this release, including AutoCAD 11, 12, and 13, all versions of 3D Studio, and AutoSketch. The AutoCAD drivers now include icon menuing and spy glass. **NOTE** This release was patched 04/95 by Orchid Technical Support with the following changes: A. Fixed a typo in INSTALL.DAT that was causing the UDH.DLL file (a Kelvin Windows driver module) not to unpack. B. Updated the version of DCI543X.DRV (a Kelvin Windows driver module). This updated file should fix the problems that were occurring with Video for Windows v1.1d and v1.1e when the v1.4 Kelvin disk was first released. Troubleshooting --------------- The most common question the Orchid Technical Support department gets regarding installation of Windows drivers is from people who have installed the drivers using KINSTALL, yet when they go into the Windows Control Panel the Kelvin driver icon doesn't show up. This problem is almost exclusively caused by memory managers loaded in your config.sys file. If you're using QEMM or EMM386 (or a similar type of memory manager), you need to exclude the Kelvin's RAM and ROM memory area so your memory manager doesn't try to use that area. The syntax for EMM386 and QEMM is to add the statement X=A000-C7FF to the EMM or QEMM setup line in your config.sys file. If you are using QEMM's "Stealth" feature (ST:M or ST:F), you also need to add the statement XST=C000 to your line in config.sys. Then reboot, and look for the icon in Windows. If you use QEMM, it may be necessary to re-run the Optimize program after adding the Kelvin exclusions.
