Adaptec pioneered the headerless technology evolution and was first to market with a headerless controller chip, the AIC-8371. The AIC-8375 incorporates a number of enhancements to the AIC-8371, demonstrating Adaptec's continued commitment to providing the lowest-cost and lowest-risk solutions for the AT market. Lowest Cost The AIC-8375 is carefully architected to minimize silicon area and is tailored specifically for the cost-sensitive mainstream market. This is exemplified by the headerless scheme which optimizes the existing chip architecture to help reduce cost. The AIC-8375 is designed to interface with industry-standard memory components, achieving the highest bandwidths possible. Additionally, the AIC-8375 is fabricated in the same cost-effective, high-density 0.6 micron CMOS process as its predecessor. Lowest Risk Migration The AIC-8375 is based around Adaptec's proven Core Controller Technology representing over ten years of hard disk controller expertise. The AIC-8375 is pin compatible to, and shares a number of blocks with, the AIC-8371, allowing for an easy migration. The AIC-8375's headerless architecture has also evolved from the AIC-8371 with enhancements geared to providing more efficient programming and maintaining full backward compatibility. Adaptec also provides a fully functional core-controller firmware base to facilitate quick development of customized AT drive code. Market Performance Accommodating drive requirements for higher transfer rates and areal densities, the AIC-8375 supports all the FAST ATA transfer modes along with disk data rates to 120 Mbits/sec. To ensure data integrity in light of the higher speeds, the AIC-8375 features an advanced 3-way interleaved ECC which can correct up to three errors on the fly. With this powerful ECC, many drives will not require any additional firmware for error correction. The ECC logic is also capable of detecting up to four errors per interleave. In addition, ECC seeding has been added to ensure proper data retrieval in a headerless environment. Market Migration Adaptec's evolutionary design approach, especially in evidence with the AIC-8375 headerless migration, allows for maximum code leverage and performance gains while assuring low risk and fast time to market each step of the way. The AIC-8375 provides the foundation for future advances in headerless technology, as well as a clear path to an integrated solution. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- AT Interface Block * Fast ATA PIO Modes 0-4 * ATA Multiword-DMA Modes 0-2 * IORDY for PIO flow control * Automatic AT R/W command execution * Automatic AT Task File updates * 32-byte host FIFO * LBA or CHS Task File Modes * Programmable IRQ automation * On-chip 12mA Host Drivers ECC Block * Optimized 168-bit, ECC with triple burst on the fly, 65-bit single burst on-the-fly correction in < 1 sector time or 17-bit double or triple burst on-the-fly correction in < 1 sector time * Error detection up to four bursts * SW correction with burst limiting * Fault Tolerant sync mark detection with 2-byte sync * ECC Seeding * Error Logging Microprocessor Interface Block * Direct support for Intel or Motorola multiplexed or non-multiplexed interfaces * READY line for interfacing to faster processors * Programmable open drain interrupt output for host, disk and buffer * Address latch outputs for multiplexed microprocessor interface * Direct buffer addressing in 2K windows Disk Controller Block * Enhanced Headerless Architecture (EDSA) * 50, 100, and 120+ Mbit/sec disk rate in single-, dual- and byte-wide NRZ modes * 31 x 3 byte flexible RAM based sequencer * Defect skipping and/or embedded servo capabilities with Constant Density Recording * 32-byte data FIFO * Two-index timer * MR head and PRML channel support Buffer Controller Block * 8-bit wide or 16-bit wide buffer data bus with parity * Supports up to 4 Mbytes DRAM, up to 40 Mbytes/sec buffer bandwidth using page mode DRAM * Supports up to 256 Kbytes SRAM; up to 50 Mbytes/sec buffer bandwidth * Automated Data Flow Management (ADFM) automates disk/host transfers * Variable Segmentation * Write Cache support * Servo split counts out of buffer Other Features * 128-pin QFP and TQFP packages * Automated power management * High-speed, low-power CMOS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adaptec, Inc. 691 South Milpitas Boulevard Milpitas, California 95035 Tel: (408) 945-8600 Adaptec Japan - Tokyo Tel: (81) 3-5276-9882 Adaptec Singapore Block 1002 Jalan Merah Central #07-18/20 Singapore 0315 Telephone: (65) 278-5213 FAX: (65) 273-0163 Adaptec Brussels Dreve Richelle 161 Bldg.
