UNIX Common Questions and Answers Document #39210 Q: I am running UnixWare. How do I know the version of the ADSA driver in my system? A: You should see the version of the ADSA driver right after the UnixWare logo. The other way to check is viewing the top page of the space.c file in the following path: /etc/conf/pack.d/adsa/space.c. Q: What Adaptec host adapter drivers come with the IHV HBA diskette that is shipping with UnixWare 1.1? A: AHA-151x, AHA-152x, AHA-154x, AHA-164x, and AHA-174x. Q: What is the correct set-up for the IRQs when using an Adaptec host adapter with UnixWare 1.x? A: Below is the host adapter driver name and the IRQ that should be set on the Adaptec host adapter (with the AHA-294x / AHA-394x cards the IRQ will be set in the motherboard ), CMOS, with EISAcards IRQs will be changed through your EISA config, all other cards will be set with SCSI Select or with Jumpers. Should I enable the Extended Translation in the Advanced Configuration Options of SCSISelect? A: No. This feature is for MSDOS 5.0 or above. MS Windows, or OS/2 v2.X only. SCO UNIX operating system handles its own translation of SCSI drives greater than 1 GB. SCO uses 10-byte SCSI commands for supporting these drives. The UNIX root file system must be in the first 1024 cylinders (Iocated in the first 1 GB) . Always disable extended translation for UNIX systems. Disable the Extended BIOS Translation feature even if your drive or drives are less than 1 GB. Q: How do I install MS DOS and SCO UNIX on the same drive? A: Extended BIOS Translation must be disabled (Advanced Configuration Options in SCSI Select). You must create the DOS partition on the hard drive first. For MS DOS v3.3, the size of the partition must be 32 Meg-bytes or less. For MS DOS v4.0 and newer, there is no such limitation. After installing DOS, the SCO UNIX can be installed from the N1 floppy diskette. Use FDISK (from DOS or UNIX command line prompt) to change the active boot partition you wish to boot from. Q: Do I need a driver for SCO XENIX to work with the AHA-154x, AHA-1640, and AHA-174x? A: SCO XENIX v2.3.4 and v2.3.2GT and above have built in driver support for these cards. However, the AHA-174x in enhanced mode (AHA-174x in standard mode emulates a 154x card) is not supported. There is an upgrade to the XENIX embedded driver available directly from SCO called XNX252 for the 174x enhanced mode. 151x and 152x cards are not supported in SCO XENIX and there are no drivers available for these cards in the SCO XENIX environment. Q: Do I need drivers to use a tape drive or CD-ROM drive under SCO UNIX v3.2.4? How do I know if the device is compatible? How do I know if it is installed successfully? A: A driver is required. It is embedded in the UNIX kernel. Invoke the mkdev cdrom or mkdev tape command with the correct options to install the devices (consult your UNIX user's manual). The supported devices are listed in the SCO hardware compatibility handbook and SCO release notes (these are available from SCO not Adaptec). Some devices might work even though they are not listed. If the device you are trying to install is not supported, an error message will be displayed. Check the etc/conf/cf.d/mscsi subdirectory for all the configured devices or run hwconfig -h. Q: Where can I get the SCO driver for the AHA-174x to run in enhanced mode with my SCO UNIX v3.2.4, ODT v2.0 or ODT v3.0? A: You already have it. The AHA-174x host adapter drivers are embedded for SCO UNIX v3.2.4, ODT v2.0, and ODT v3.0. Both standard and enhanced modes of the AHA-174x are fully supported. Q: When do I need to install the Adaptec ASW-1450 driver? A: You need to install the ASW-1450 only when using SCO UNIX v3.2.2 or ODT 1.1 with an AHA-154x, AHA-164x, or AHA-174x. This driver is not required unless one of the following is true: You need support for multiple host adapters, you wish to use the AHA-174X in enhanced mode, or you wish to enable the scatter/gather feature for enhanced performance on the AHA-154x, AHA-164x, and AHA-174x series host adapters. If you need to get this driver disk, you must contact Adaptec Technical Support at 408-934-7274 and request that the ASW-1450 driver disk be mailed to you. This driver is not on the Adaptec BBS. Q: Which UNIX driver is required for my AHA-274x / AHA-284x / AHA-294x / AHA-394x card with SCO UNIX or UnixWare? A: The 7700 Manager Set is required for the AHA-274x and AHA-284x when running under SCO UNIX or Novell UnixWare. The 7800 Manager Set is needed for the AHA-294x and AHA-394x host adapters in SCO UNIX or Novell UnixWare. These drivers are available from Adaptec sales. You can also download these drivers from our BBS but you will need an up and running UNIX system in order to create the driver disks. The 7700.EXE and 7800.EXE are self extracting files. Follow the README file that comes with these drivers. The file names on the BBS are 7700.EXE for the AHA-274x / AHA-284x cards and 7800.EXE for the AHA-294x / AHA-394x cards. Q: I can't get my CD-ROM to load SCO UNIX it just hangs. What could cause this? A: Make sure you have your CD-ROM set to SCSI ID 5 for CD-ROMs during SCO installs. This is the SCO default. Q: I am having trouble installing my SCO operating system from tape. What could cause this? A: Make sure you have your tape drive set to SCSI ID 2 for SCO to install from tape. This is the SCO default SCSI ID for tape drives. Q: Does Adaptec have a driver for the AHA-274x / 284x / 294x / 394x card that supports multi-threading? A: SCO has a patch for these card drivers that supports multi-threading. Contact SCO for the patch. Q: I am trying to install SCO UNIX with my AHA-294x / AHA-394x and I get the error "interrupt 10 is private". What does this error mean? A: Interrupt 10 can not be used by the Adaptec controller during SCO installs. For the AHA-294x card, correct your motherboard PCI configuration to not use interrupt 10 for the slot that the AHA-294x card is in. For the AHA-394x card, ensure the motherboard PCI configuration does not allow interrupt 10 to be used by the PCI bus. Set interrupt 10 to be reserved for ISA cards. Q: I get intermittent data over-runs/under-runs. What could cause this? A: This is usually an issue with the hard drive itself. Contact the hard drive company to see if there are any firmware upgrades for the drive. Try another drive. Q: I get "poll command failed" error during my SCO UNIX install. What does this error mean? A: This is usually caused by the Extended Translation for DOS Drives > 1 GB being turned on in the Advanced Configuration Options of the Adaptec card. This is a DOS feature. Simply disable this feature for UNIX (see your manual). If this fails to fix the problem low level the hard drive or try another hard drive. Also verify your boot drive is set to SCSI ID 0 and your Adaptec host adapter is set to SCSI ID 7. Q: I get "sdisk unrecoverable error reading SCSI disk 0". What does this error indicate? A: This error usually indicates a corrupt UNIX partition. Ensure Extended BIOS Translation for DOS Drives > 1 GB is disabled, then low level format the hard disk indicated in the error. Q: I get the error "srmountfun" when I am installing SCO UNIX. Any ideas what could cause this error? A: This error seems to indicate that SCO has a compatibility issue with your hard drive. Verify all SCSI device terminations are correct. Try a lower transfer rate for that SCSI device in the SCSI Device Configurations menu of the Adaptec card BIOS (5MB instead of 10MB). Try setting the Sync Neg to disabled for the SCSI ID of that drive in SCSI Device Configurations of the Adaptec card BIOS. Try a low level format the drive. And finally, try another hard drive that is known to work with SCO. Q: I am having disconnect problems with my SCSI drives. What could cause this? A: Make sure you are using the latest UNIX drivers. Contact your hard drive company to see if there are any firmware upgrades available. Q: I am trying to install SCO UNIX with my AHA-294x / AHA-394x card. How should my motherboard be configured? A: You should set up your motherboard to use INT-A and an interrupt other than 10 for the PCI slot that the 294x card is installed in. Setting the Adaptec card slot to interrupt 10 will cause SCO UNIX installs to fail. For AHA-394x installs, just make sure the motherboard does not allow interrupt 10 to be used by PCI cards. Set Interrupt 10 to be reserved for ISA cards. Q: I get "memory fault core dump - Dumping xxxx pages" on my SCO system. What could cause this? A: This usually indicates a serious motherboard failure. Verify the motherboard you are using in SCO is compatible. Verify your memory chips and chip speeds. Many clone motherboards are built for use in only the DOS environment and are not capable of the more demanding environment of UNIX. Always use UNIX compatible motherboards for UNIX based systems. Q: I get a "System error 6: while getting fs type", when I try to install SCO UNIX Open Enterprise 5 CDROM using the alad325 driver from the 7800 Family Manager Set version 1.2. " How do I install UNIX? A: First try installing UNIX without linking in the manager set driver. If the embedded driver does not work, then try to use "ahslink" instead of the "link" command at the boot prompt. Q: I get an "Invalid Fixed Disk Parameter Table" error when installing UNIX with a 2940. What could cause this? A: This can be caused by an incorrect PCI configuration. Check the following items: -IRQ in the PCI setup in system CMOS is level triggered. -PCI interrupt is configured for "INT A",which refers to the interrupt structure. -Bus Mastering is enabled for the PCI slot. Q: What could cause my system to halt with an F12 message when installing UNIX with a 1542CP host adapter? A: This is an indication that the 1542CP host adpater isn't configured properly. The following options should be changed from inside the SCSI Select utility: -Disable Plug-and-Play SCAM support. -Change the termination from 'Auto' to 'Enabled'. -Disable bios scan. -Disable extended bios translation. -Disable bios support for more than two drives. Q: Which driver prefix do I use with SCO UNIX and the different Adaptec host adpaters: A: SCO Unix Version SCSI Host Adapter Driver Package Driver Prefix SCO UNIX v3.2.4.0 AIC-6260 Driver embedded spad SCO UNIX v3.2.4.1 AIC-6360 6000 family set smad Open Desktop 2.x AHA-1540CF/1542CF Driver embedded ad AHA-1640 Driver embedded ad AHA-1740A/1742A/1744 Driver embedded eiad AIC-7770 7700 family set arad AIC-7870 7800 fmily set alad version 1.02 and below SCO UNIX v3.2.4.2 AIC-6260 Driver embedded spad Open Desktop 3.x AIC-6360 6000 family set smad AHA-1540CF/1542CF Driver embedded ad AHA-1640 Driver embedded ad AHA-1740A/1742A/1744 Driver embedded eiad AIC-7770 7700 family set arad AIC-7870 7800 family set alad SCO UNIX v3.2.5 AIC-6260 Driver embedded spad Open Enterprise 5.x AIC-6360 Driver embedded spad AHA-1540CF/1542CF Driver embedded ad AHA-1640 Driver embedded ad AHA-1740A/1742A/1744 Driver embedded eiad AIC-7770 Driver embedded arad but update with arad325 7700 family set version 2.1 AIC-7870 Driver embedded alad but update with alad325 7800 family set version 1.2 Revised on 4/1/96
