Trantor Products Common Questions and Answers Doc # 39080 Q. What is the difference between the T-3x8 and the APA-3x8? A. The products are the same, just the name has been changed. Q. Are Trantor products SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 compatible? A. All Trantor products are SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 command compatible. Q. What is the difference between the MiniSCSI Plus (T-348) and the MiniSCSI EPP (T-358)? A. With the T-358 you can get up to 1 MB/sec burst rate while running on an Enhanced Parallel Port, but the transfer rate of the T-348 on the same port is only up to 260 KB/sec. The T-358 will also run on a Uni- directional or Bi-directional Parallel Port, but at a reduced rate. Q. How do I find out which type of Parallel Port I have? A. You will need to either look in your manual, check your CMOS settings, or call the manufacturer of your system. Most Intel 386SL and 486SL computers have EPP Ports. Most desktop computers do not. Q. Can I use your Parallel to SCSI adapters on a desktop system? A. Yes, as long as your system is IBM compatible (i.e. 286, 386, 486) and not Macintosh or Amiga. Q. Do Trantor-brand controllers support the new NEC 3X CD-ROM drive? A. If used with a T-348 or T-358, make sure the 3Xp provides enough termination power and turn the termination switch off. You can daisy chain another SCSI device that provides termination power with the 3Xp. Q. My T-338, T-348, or T-358 does NOT plug into the NEC-3X CD- ROM. Why not? A. You may call 800-NEC-INFO and purchase a converter cable. It is a 50-pin high density cable. Q. Why do I get "No SCSI Functions in use" when loading TSCSI.SYS? A. TSCSI.SYS is for hard drives. Make sure the hard drive is attached, powered on, and formatted. Q. I get "no Host Adapter found" with T-338, T-348, or T-358? A. Make sure the SCSI device provides termination power, and the ASPI manager (MA3##) loads in CONFIG.SYS. Try another SCSI device. Q. How can I check for TERM-PWR when using the T-338, T-348, or T-358? A. Try attaching the printer cable to the printer-pass-through on the T- 338, T-348, or T-358. If it prints, then the SCSI device has termination power. Otherwise, call the manufacturer or measure pin 38 (5-volts) and pin 37 (ground). Q. Why do I get "No SCSI $MGR Found"? A. Make sure you are loading the correct ASPI manager (MA###.SYS) for the Trantor-brand adapter. If using the T-338, T-348, or T-358 adapters, make sure the SCSI device supplies 5-Volt termination power. Q. Does the T-338, T-348, or T-358 family support greater than a gigabyte hard drives? A. SCSIWorks! v1.2 or v1.3 software supports greater than a gigabyte hard drives. Boot the system with the ASPI manager loaded. Low level format (if necessary) with TFORMAT /L.Reboot with ASPI manager and TSCSI.SYS loaded. Use FDISK to partition the drive and FORMAT to format the partitions. Q. Is the HP-IIcx scanner supported? A. No. Only the HP-IIc and HP-IIp are supported at this time. Check with HP for an ASPI compatible IIcx driver. Q. I do NOT see a driver to back up removable devices in Tapemate. Why not? A. Select the DOS disk driver in the Tapemate Configuration Table. Q. How do I get hard disk drivers for my Media Vision Pro Audio Studio, Pro Audio Spectrum, or Sigma Designs sound card? A. You will need to purchase SCSIWorks! which will allow you to connect your hard drive as well as CDROMs, M/O drives, removable media, tape drives, and HP Scanjet II scanners. Q. How do I get a cable for my Pro Audio Sound Card? A. You will need to call Media Vision to get any cables for the Pro Audio Cards. The only product we have for that card is SCSIWorks! software. We have never supplied any type of cables for their cards. The number to Media Vision's Technical Support is (541)-882-1177. Q. What does it mean when the MSCDEX.EXE loads and I receive the error message "Incorrect DOS Version". A. DOS 6 contains its own version of MSCDEX.EXE located in the DOS directory. There are two solutions. You can overwrite Trantor's MSCDEX.EXE with the DOS version. Or you can change the path in the autoexec.bat to the DOS 6 directory. Q. During the TFORMAT process the drive reports a "CMD failure ##" message, why? A. The TFORMAT program may have a conflict with a TSR or MEMORY resident program. Create a boot floppy with the correct ASPI manager in the config.sys. Example of the config.sys line: "device=ma13b.sys". Copy the manager and TFORMAT to the floppy. Reboot the computer from the floppy and run TFORMAT. Answer Y to make the drive bootable even if you are not booting from the drive. Once completed, reboot from the normal C: drive. Q. My T-338, T-348, or T-358 driver fails to load and it says "No host adapter present." A. The T-338, T-348, or T-358 requires that the SCSI device provide termination power. The T-338, T-348, or T-358 receives its power from the SCSI device connected. To conduct a quick test to verify termination power, connect a printer to the T-338, T-348, or T-358 pass through port and execute a print screen. If the printer fails to print, the T-338, T-348, or T-358 lacks termination power. Verify that the SCSI device provides termination power. Q. I installed my TEXEL drive internally to a T-130B and when I reboot, the error message "no host adapter detected" appears. A. Power down the PC and pull all the cables from the T-130 card and reboot. If the card is found, the cable is installed incorrectly. Re- install the cable 180 degrees from previous direction on the T-130B internal connector. Q. My T-338, T-348, or T-358 devices will not operate when connected to a Iomega Bernoulli drive. Why not? A. The T-338, T-348, or T-358 receives power from the device. Iomega drives like the 90 or 150 ship from the factory with the termination power jumper removed. As a result they will not work as a stand alone device with the T-338, T-348, or T-358 . You will have to daisy chain the Iomega with another device that supplies termination power or have an Iomega approved service center install the termination power jumper on the jumper block marked TRM. WIN NT Q. How do I get OS/2 or Windows NT drivers for Trantor cards? A. These drivers are shipped with your Trantor product. You can also download them from our BBS (408)945-7727 or CompuServe ("GO Trantor"). Revised 4/4/96
