Patch Name: PHKL_25725 Patch Description: s700_800 11.00 Cumulative vfork(2) patch Creation Date: 01/11/20 Post Date: 01/11/21 Hardware Platforms - OS Releases: s700: 11.00 s800: 11.00 Products: N/A Filesets: OS-Core.CORE2-KRN,fr=B.11.00,fa=HP-UX_B.11.00_32,v=HP OS-Core.CORE2-KRN,fr=B.11.00,fa=HP-UX_B.11.00_64,v=HP Automatic Reboot?: Yes Status: General Release Critical: Yes PHKL_25725: CORRUPTION PANIC PHKL_20731: PANIC Category Tags: defect_repair general_release critical panic corruption Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700_800/11.X/PHKL_25725 Symptoms: PHKL_25725: ( SR:8606226816 CR:JAGad95878 ) If a vfork(2) fails, it can result in unprotected modification of the reference count for the process' vas. This race condition has the potential to cause a system panic, although internal testing was unable to produce one. PHKL_20731: Under severe memory pressure, system could panic with what appeared to be a bad pointer in vasusage(). Defect Description: PHKL_25725: ( SR:8606226816 CR:JAGad95878 ) Modification of the vas reference count was not protected by any locking mechanism. Resolution: Added a spinlock to protect modifications to the vas reference count. PHKL_20731: This was an MP race between vfork(2) and vmtotal(). If the system is out of RAM, vfork(2) can fail, and there was a small chance that a corrupt p_vas could result. Resolution: Acquire/release spinlocks around the critical section in vfork(2).
